The City supports the use of clean air vehicles and is a leader in implementing alternative fuel technology into the City's fleet of vehicles and equipment.  The City has met a goal of converting one-third of the City's fleet to Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFVs).  Thousand Oaks was the first city in Ventura County to purchase Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) passenger vehicles and buses and the first to operate a public/private CNG fueling facility and electrical charging stations.  The City now aims to convert 50 percent of its fleet to AFVs.
The City has focused on CNG as the most viable fuel source due to availability, fuel characteristics, and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) availability which means vehicles ready to operate on CNG are available from the manufacturer without a retrofit.  CNG makes almost half of the fuel consumed by the City's fleet and is used to operate light trucks, sedans and transit buses.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, when "compared with vehicles fueled by conventional diesel and gasoline, natural gas vehicles can produce significantly lower amounts of harmful emissions such as nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and toxic and carcinogenic pollutants as well as the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide."

In 2001, the City of Thousand Oaks opened the first public/private CNG fueling station in Ventura County.  The CNG station helped to further the City's quest to expand its green fleet and to make it possible for private companies and citizens to operate CNG vehicles as well.  The City's Natural Gas Fueling Station is located at:
                        1993 Rancho Conejo Blvd.
                        Newbury Park, CA  91320
                           Accepts Visa/MasterCard
